Win-Sam teams up to win 2016 Vista Award for Healthcare Engineering

Win-Sam is pleased to have been included in the coveted 2016 Vista Award for Infrastructure from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) as part of a cross-functional team at Carolinas Healthcare System.

ASHE, part of the American Hospital Association, uses the Vista Awards to recognize teams that use efficient communication and data-based decision making to develop safe, quality health care environments.

ASHE only awards three of these each year. This team won in the Infrastructure category (involving projects that modify or replace major portions of a facility’s utility or control systems) for a project with Carolinas Medical Center Pineville.

The project is a great example of the type of work Win-Sam does all the time – work that relies heavily on technical expertise, risk assessment and detailed planning for future operations, maintenance and management.

The campus at Carolinas Medical Center Pineville had grown with the local population, and the additional square footage was overwhelming the central energy plant, whose location in the middle of campus left no room for expansion. Win-Sam worked with RDK EngineersWright McGraw Beyer Architects and ColeJenest & Stone to provide real-world, operations, maintenance and management input on the design of a new plant on the edge of campus, with a powerful electrical system and even more room to expand, should the medical center need more chillers, boilers or generators in the future. The team designed the facility to be easily maintainable, and so that future expansions could be made without interrupting service.

The plant can be operated remotely from another campus, and includes an advanced monitoring system for detecting potential problems. The project was finished under budget, and the plant has already provided significant energy savings.
